This vibrantly colored calavera mask celebrates the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos. These Day of the Dead folk art masks have a special place in my heart, so I take care to make each one colorful, joyful and unique. This one features shades of pale blue, royal blue, butternut, deep orange and black against a skull white background. At the center is an abstract hand painted marigold design, with a sculpted leather flower blooming out of the forehead. The leather flower is embellished with a vintage black metal filigree and a 1960’s vintage glass stone. The mask is dotted with smaller glass cabochons from the same era, as well as vintage Swarovski crystal stones.
It’s a half mask with simple shaping, and it measures about 7.5″ wide by 5″ high. It ties with elegant and durable stretch lace straps. Like all of my masks, this piece was entirely handcrafted from top quality materials, including premium tooling leather, artist grade acrylic paints, a flexible water resistant top coat, vintage glass gems, and beautiful coordinating ties.
These photos are less than stellar – it started to rain while I was taking them, so you may notice “speckles” or spots on the mask and background; not to worry, these are raindrops rather than flaws or discoloration on the mask. I’ll get some better photos when I’m able!
