These beaded squares were created for the 9/11 Bead Quilt Project —a global, collaborative work of memorial art.
This block of squares can be found on the first panel of the NY quilt (click here to view all of the panels created for this project). The image includes the contributors’ names, and any statements they provided are included below.
Leah Henriquez-Ready, New Mexico: The face comes from my favorite button store in the garment district of New York City, so I knew she had to be on the square. The quote is the last part of a quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes celebrating the human spirit’s resilience. “What lies before us and what lies behind us are tiny matters compared to what lies within.”
Techniques include bead embroidery, flat peyote, and surface embellished beadweaving.
