This beaded owl necklace centers around a handmade porcelain barn owl face made by in demand artist, Laura Mears. The porcelain cabochon is set in a hand sewn bezel of seed beads in matte metallic hues of bronze and copper, with opalescent whites and grays.
Her body is comprised of two semiprecious stone cabochons – a white moonstone and a grayish brown stone that I think is some sort of feldspar. The cabs are surrounded with semiprecious stone beads, including grey moonstone, faceted smoky quartz, and flashy labradorite. The pendant portion measures about 2.25″ long by 1.75″ wide.
The beaded pendant rests on an aged brass filigree stamping that is suggestive of wings. This connects to a neckline of high quality semiprecious stone beads including faceted smoky quartz, rutilated quartz, faceted labradorite, rainbow moonstone, pyrite and faceted fossilized coral. It adjusts from about 17.5″ long on up to 21″, and it fastens with a lobster claw clasp. The photos with a mannequin show this necklace at the shortest and longest lengths, and there are a few settings in between.
My original design for this piece was entirely different, but as I worked, this creature began to emerge and would not be denied. In my mind, she’s a mama owl spirit with a sort of angelic energy. Don’t ask me why I think that – it’s just the story that I imagine for her. You are (of course) free to interpret this piece as you see fit; however you see it, I hope that you enjoy her.
